Today I decided to release Mr. Bean – adult feral who has been with me for last three months. He had severe case of PMV and surprisingly fully recovered. No fits, no diarrhea even under stress, when arguing with other males or me handling him. Only strange behavior after illness is the mumbling sounds he emits when I’m around him. So I took him out of cage and snapped a ring on his leg for good-bye. Then I opened a door and went out leaving it open for him to take off. Couple of hours later, he was still there trying to get into the cage of young non-releasable hen (PMV survivor). I let her out, watched love scene for some time and went to make bigger cage for new couple.

We never release PMV survivors because one never can predict if the symptoms will return. Do the PMV surviviors you release say around your place so you can keep an eye on them?

Before Mr. Bean, I had three birds that fully recovered from PMV and I released them. They enjoyed their freedom for couple of days and returned. So, de facto they are still with me. In the two~three years period not one of them showed any neurological or other symptoms Before releasing any bird, I place snap in ring on their legs with my tel. number, just in case that someone finds them. In general yes, most of the birds stay in the area and I feed them and monitor them. I decided to release him because he was so restless, I wander why.

Well, that's smart to put a snap band with your phone number. I like that idea a lot.

I'll post picture tomorrow, it is 23:00 in SA and I'll get a lot of bad words from my birds if I take a snap now.

That is good, but the risk is always there. Our Speckles started showing neurological symptoms that prevented her from flying 7 years after we had rescued her. She can flutter down from her nesting box but we have to lift her back in...we also have to be very careful about her (and a couple of others) if we put out a bath. |

They are quite a beautiful couple. Blue, reminds me in appearance, of my little Libby.

Wow, mr. Bean looks absolutely gorgeous - what a lovely plumage. And Blue looks similar to our wild Willy. What a lovely couple - I really hope that they are getting along

Actually I’m relieved that Mr. Bean decided to stay. By my experience, PMV bird with mate has quicker recovery and fever neurological problems. Blue is such a quiet and tame hen that I was feeling sorry for her loneliness. Today she was full of energy and preened Mr. Bean so systematically that I was afraid that he would end up boldie.
